Could Your Family Be an SVCC Schnauzer Guardian Home?

Adopt a beautifully bred, health-tested Miniature Schnauzer as your beloved family companion.

Our Guardian Home Program is one of the most meaningful partnerships we offer at SVCC. A Guardian family adopts one of our carefully bred Miniature Schnauzers — this schnauzer lives in your home and is yours in every way that matters. In exchange, SVCC retains breeding rights. When the breeding program is complete, the dog is spayed or neutered and is entirely yours, with no further obligations to us. We have been facilitating this program for over five years with 16 Guardian families in the greater Philadelphia area, and we are now welcoming a few new families that live within 40 minutes of Haverford, PA.

HOW IT WORKS

What Does a Guardian Home Family Actually Do?

Much less than you might think! Here is the honest picture:

·     ✓  She or he lives with you full-time as your family pet from the day the puppy comes to your home.

·     ✓  For a female, once or twice a year, she will come into heat. You contact Shawn right away — we handle breeding from there. She comes to our Haverford home only for whelping — typically for 5 to 6 weeks — and returns to you once her puppies are weaned. For male Guardian families, the process is even simpler — he never leaves home. Breeding visits take 30 to 40 minutes and are scheduled around your calendar. Shawn will call to ask if the boy can be available to do his job, and a date is arranged.

·     ✓  SVCC covers all breeding-related costs: DNA testing, ultrasounds, and all whelping vet care. You cover normal pet expenses.

·     ✓  After the female’s her third litter, she is spayed and is yours for the rest of her life. For a male, he will be retired between 5 - 6 years of age.

THE FINANCIAL PICTURE

What Does It Cost? (The Answer May Surprise You.)

You place a $1,000 deposit at the time of the agreement. That deposit is returned to you in full after her third litter when she is spayed and retired from our program. Our Prep School graduates — the same caliber of puppy we place in Guardian Homes — are adopted by pet families for $5,500. Your net cost as a Guardian family is $0.

You receive a beautifully bred, Embark DNA health-tested, Prep School-trained Miniature Schnauzer as a lifetime family companion. We think that is a remarkable partnership.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY?

Guardian Home Families Tend to Look Like This

After five years and 16 Guardian placements, we have noticed that certain families thrive in this program. You do not need to check every box — but if several of these resonate, this may be a wonderful fit:

  • You have a flexible home schedule — working from home, homeschooling your children, or a family member who is home during the day.

  • You live within approximately 30 to 40 minutes of Haverford, PA.

  • You understand and embrace that he or she is a breeding dog as well as a beloved pet — and you find that meaningful to be part of the SVCC Mission.

  • You want a long-term relationship with your breeder.

  • You have a safely fenced yard or are committed to leash safety in public.

Homeschooling families have been among our most wonderful Guardian Home partners. A dog in a home-centered learning environment — present for reading time, nature study, and daily family life — thrives.

HEALTH & BREEDING STANDARDS

What You Can Expect from an SVCC Guardian Dog

Every SVCC breeding dog is Embark DNA tested and cleared of all the issues Embark tests for, including the common Miniature Schnauzer genetic health issues — PMDS, Myotonia Congenita, and Demyelinating Polyneuropathy. We target a coefficient of inbreeding below the breed average. Our Guardian dogs are among the most carefully selected to create the future of our program.

We are also transparent about something that occasionally surprises families: through a process called genetic recombination, a small number of our puppies receive Embark results showing a tiny percentage of ancestral Poodle DNA — even though every SVCC breeding parent tests as 100% Miniature Schnauzer and we have never owned a Poodle. This does not affect health, temperament, or hypoallergenic coat. We mention it because we believe you deserve to know everything we know. You can read the full explanation on our Breeding Standards page.

FAQ

Common Questions

  • Please tell us. Our agreement addresses life changes — relocation, family transitions, and other circumstances — and we navigate them together. We have been doing this for years and have always found a thoughtful path forward to meet the SVCC Guardian agreement.

  • Absolutely! Our dogs are raised with families in mind. A full life that may include family and children growing up alongside a Guardian dog is exactly the life we hope for SVCC dogs

  • You handle routine vet care. We cover anything breeding-related. For serious illness or injury, contact us immediately — we are your partners in her care throughout the program.

  • The female comes to our Haverford home approximately one week before her due date and returns to you once her puppies are weaned at 5 to 6 weeks. We send you regular photo and video updates throughout her stay. She is well loved here — and always happy to come home to you.

  • Not required, but she must never be off-leash in an unfenced area. A leash in public and safe supervised outdoor time at home are the standards we ask all Guardian families to maintain.

  • Fill out the inquiry form on the CONTACT PAGE or call Shawn at 215-588-1188. We will have a conversation. No pressure, and no rush to see if this feels like the right fit for your life.
